The Value of Taking a Break

I was getting disillusioned with poker, sick of the bad beats and suckouts so I decided to take a break.

I went back to basics and reread Sklansky and Harrington and a new book by Erick Lindgren. This made me realise I had strayed from the path of optimum play and had been making a lot of bad decisions.

Now back playing I'm still making the occasional bad decision but making the money far more often.

Experimenting with Styles of play

Over the past month I have been experimenting with my style of play in MTTs. Certain changes have proven unworkable but other changes have meant a noticeable rise in final table places and cashes. What I find the best change is a rule I have of never limping into a pot. In a tournament last night I broke this rule twice and both times it cost me, but I did manage to make it to second place

I've neglected this somewhat recently so a quick update. The Bolton Poker6 was a great event for me as I won my table beating some established Pros to take home £2000. The blind structure was very good and meant a 6 seater table starting at 8pm finished at 3am the following morning.

My next success was to win one of the Poker Player Spin Palace shootout freeroll events which gave me entry to a live event in the pokerzone TV studios. It was a fast game designed for TV so luck played more part in the game than skill. To see how I got on check out pokerzone on 21st November at 8pm.

Two final table places in the Poker Player Grand Prix 2 series meant another expenses paid trip to a live event, this time at the Big Slick club in Croydon courtesy of Betfair. Free booze meant an early exit for me but got to meet lots of fellow punters lounge members and had a great night.

Poker6 in Bolton

Monday night I won the Racing Post Freeroll at Blue Square for a £1000 buy in to the Poker6 tournament at the Grosvenor Casino in Bolton along with £250 to cover expenses. What was most remarkable was when down to five players I cameback from less than one big blind to win. Next time someone tells you the chip and a chair story remember it happens more often than you might think.

I'll update on my progress in Bolton after the weekend.
